When you hear the words kandy base coat, you’re thinking “Hey it’s a base coat that I can spray right over my primer/sealer.” In all actuality, it’s not. When you start to use the Formula tab of House of Kolor’s website, you see exactly what they’ve been doing. Selling you powder pearls mixed with a candy concentrate and base maker.

Take for example KBC11 Apple Red KBC, it’s simply DP32 (dry pearl lilac), KK11 (apple red kandy koncentrate) and S2-00 (trans nebulae). Now when you look at their formula page for KBC11, you’ll see they tell you to spray it over their S2-25. That is their jet black base coat.

So why are they called kandy base coats when in reality they are just a kandy & pearl mid-coat? Well that is up to which salesman you ask. 

Make Your Own

Now that you know this information, you can create your own kandy base coat using your favorite powdered pearls, cande concentrate and intercoat clear.

Formula for Mixing Your Own Kandy Base Coat (KBC)

For example, for a gallon of unreduced “kandy base coat” you’d mix 1 gallon of clear carrier with 25.6oz of cande concentrate & 51.2g of dry pearl. Then reduce this mixture according to the clear carrier’s TDS guidelines. Pour into your gun & begin spraying over your choice of solid color ground coat.
